It was a night full of great racing at Madison International Speedway as double features in four divisions plus the induction of four new members into the MIS Hall of Fame greeted the fans on a picture perfect night at the track.
A total of seven different drivers picked up feature wins: Zack Riddle and Bobby Wilberg (Late Models), Steve Anderson and Ryan Goldade (Sportsman), Nick Schmidt and Lyle Phillips (Bandits) each won features while Aaron Moyer won both features in the Legends.
Four new members of the MIS Hall of Fame were inducted tonight. The late Fritz Bishofberger, the late Bob Schmelzer, Dave Watson, and Conrad Morgan were honored during intermission.
Zack Riddle and Bobby Wilberg Each Pick Up Late Models Wins
Zack Riddle took the lead on lap 26 and held off the field to pick up the win in the first 30 lap feature for the Club LaMark NASCAR Late Models in a caution free event.
Brady Liddle and Tom Gille paced the field to the green flag. Liddle took a three car length lead over Gille after one lap with John Baumeister Jr., Don Wickstrum, and Bobby Wilberg completing the top five. On lap 5 Zack Riddle passed Wilberg for fifth and began to hunt down Wickstrum. One lap later Riddle moved into fourth followed by Wilberg.
Out front Liddle was building a sizeable lead over the field. Riddle took the third spot from Baumeister Jr. on lap 8 and moved into second on lap 12 when both he and Baumeister Jr. passed Gille.
Liddle’s lead was two seconds over Riddle with ten laps to go but was shrinking rapidly. With eight laps to go the lead was just one second and soon was down to just five car lengths. With six laps to go Riddle was up to challenge for the lead and with five laps to go worked to the inside of Liddle to take the lead. Liddle did his best to keep up with Riddle as Baumeister Jr. and Wilberg were running third and fourth.
Riddle was able to maintain his advantage and picked up the win followed by Liddle, Baumeister Jr., Wilberg, and John Beale.
Bobby Wilberg won the second thirty lap feature for the Club LaMark NASCAR Late Models.
Wayne Freimund took the early lead from the pole with Matt Lundberg up to second from his third starting position. Brent Edmunds moved up to third followed by John Beale and Kevin Knuese. On lap 10 Beale snuck by Edmunds for third with both Knuese and Zack Riddle doing the same one lap later. On lap 11 Zack Riddle raced his way into the top five.
Beale moved into second on lap 15 passing Lundberg coming out of turn two just before the caution flag came out for a spin in turn two.
Freimund brought the field back to the green on the restart with Beale and Riddle lining up in the second row. Beale wasted no time in challenging for the lead and pulled to the inside going into turn three but was unable to make the pass when the caution flag came out for a spin.
On the next restart it was Beale and Bobby Wilberg lining up behind the leader. On lap 17 Beale took the lead from Freimund with Riddle racing Freimund side by side for second. It all broke loose on lap 21 when Riddle made contact with Beale causing the leader to spin, bringing out the caution flag, and sending both to the back of the cars on the lead lap.
As a result of the incident, Wilberg became the new leader followed by Edmunds and John Baumeister Jr. A good restart by Wilberg gave him a five car length lead over the field. From there it was all Wilberg who cruised to victory lane followed by Edmunds, Baumeister Jr., Freimund, and Jon Reynolds Jr.
“We improved the car quite a bit from the first feature. I was kind of in the right spot at the right time. You need to have those kind of nights,” said Wilberg.
Bobby Wilberg was fast qualifier with a lap of 18.760. Zack Riddle won the RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash.
Anderson and Goldade Go to Victory Lane in Sportsman Features
Steve Anderson and Ryan Goldade captured the checkered flags in the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman features.
Steve Anderson won the first twenty lap feature.
Gary Hellenbrand and Trevor Robinson brought the ten car field to the green flag. Hellenbrand grabbed the early lead and held it for the first two laps before surrendering the top spot to Mike Taylor on lap 3. Steve Anderson and Ryan Goldade were up to second and third. On lap 6 Anderson worked his way to the outside of Taylor to take the lead coming down the front stretch.
Anderson built up some real estate over the field jumping out to a six car length lead over Goldade and Hansberry Jr. who had worked his way up to third on lap 8. Goldade and Hansberry Jr. battled it out for second behind Anderson with Hansberry Jr. eventually taking the spot from Goldade on lap 14 but still had a long ways to go to catch the leader.
Only a caution flag would slow down the leader, but it didn’t happen and this race belonged to Anderson who picked up his first feature win of the season. Hansberry Jr. finished in second followed by Goldade and Johnny Robinson III.
Goldade edged Anderson to win the second thirty lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman.
Trevor Robinson took the lead from Ray Hellenbrand on the first lap, but Goldade took the lead away on lap 3 while coming out of turn four. On lap 6 Steve Anderson muscled his way past Robinson for second while a tight battle for third was going on between Trevor Robinson, Johnny Robinson III, and Robert Hansberry Jr.
On lap 10 Hansberry Jr. passed both Robinsons to take the third position. Out front Anderson was doing what he could do to catch Goldade who had built up a big lead. Goldade’s sizeable margin disappeared on lap 15 when Trevor Robinson made heavy contact with the turn four wall a bringing out the caution flag.
Goldade paced the field back to the green with Anderson and Hansberry Jr. close behind as the three broke away from the pack. With two laps to go Anderson looked to the outside of Goldade but was unable to make the pass and gave it one more shot on the last lap but came up just short at the stripe. Hansberry Jr. finished in third followed by Johnny Robinson III and Mike Taylor.
“I didn’t do as well on the final restart, but we were able to hold Steve off,” said Goldade.
Steve Anderson was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 19.829 (90.776 mph). Robert Hansberry Jr. won the RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash.
Nick Schmidt and Lyle Phillips Raced to Bandit Wins
Nick Schmidt and Lyle Phillips each won a feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits.
James Junget took the early lead with David Schmidt, Lyle Phillips, Nick Schmidt, and Steve Dickson in close pursuit. On lap 6 David Schmidt took to the high side and passed Junget for the lead coming out of turn four.
On lap 8 Nick Schmidt worked his way inside David Schmidt for the lead. Brandon DeLacy passed David Schmidt for second on lap 11 and began to close the sizeable margin built up by Nick Schmidt.
Lapped traffic running side by side created a challenge for Schmidt with four laps to go and allowed DeLacy to close some of the gap. But DeLacy wouldn’t have enough time as Schmidt rolled to victory lane. David Schmidt finished third followed by Dickson and Phillips.
Lyle Phillips won his first ever Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits feature in the second twenty lap event.
Phillips and Steve Dickson raced side by side for the early lead while Brandon DeLacy and David Schmidt did the same for third. On lap 5 Phillips was able to take the lead from Dickson with DeLacy moving into third outside of Dickson.
On lap 10 DeLacy moved to the outside of Dickson for second but was unable to make the pass on the outside. Meanwhile, Nick Schmidt pulled inside of DeLacy for the third spot. Out front Phillips had a four car length lead over Dickson that he would never relinquish as he raced his way to victory lane in the caution free event.
“I can’t believe it. This is great,” said an excited Phillips from victory lane.
Fast qualifier was Nick Schmidt with a lap of 14.999. Schmidt also won the RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash.
Aaron Moyer Sweeps Legends Features
Aaron Moyer swept both features for the Legends picking up career wins number nineteen and twenty at Madison.
Aaron Moyer held off Jacob Nottestad to win the first twenty lap feature for the Legends.
Ryan Weyer took the early lead in the first Legends feature with Riley Stenjem running in second. The hard charging Moyer moved past Stenjem on the second lap to take the second position. On the fourth lap Moyer pulled to the inside of Weyer to take the lead with Nottestad and Max McNamara in close pursuit pulling up to second and third.
Moyer and Nottestad broke away from the pack with McNamara staying close before the caution flag came out on lap 7 for a spin.
A great restart by Moyer vaulted him back out front with McNamara and Nottestad racing side by side for second. That allowed Moyer to increase his lead out front to ten car lengths. On lap 11 McNamara cleared Nottestad for second but had a lot of ground to make up in order to catch Moyer.
It looked like smooth sailing for Moyer who had increased his lead to 12 lengths, but trouble occurred on lap 16 when a car spun in front of the leader. Moyer was able to avoid contact, but it meant another restart.
On the restart Moyer outbattled McNamara for the lead with Nottestad racing his way past McNamara for second and closing quickly on the leader. A last lap effort by Nottestad came up just short as Moyer rolled to victory lane.
Moyer also was victorious in the second twenty lap feature for the Legends.
Derek Mueller led the first lap over Riley Stenjem before both Moyer and McNamara powered by to take the top two spots with Blaze Watters and Stenjem in third and fourth.
After ten laps Moyer’s lead over McNamara was 1.4 seconds and growing as he built up a huge lead. The best race was for second with McNamara and Watters. McNamara would win the race for second, but nobody would be able to catch the speedy Moyer who won by 3.65 seconds.
“It’s been an incredible year so far, “ said Moyer. “We really had the car dialed in for the second feature.”
Max McNamara set fast time in qualifying with a mark of 14.067.
