TUNDRA TO OPEN WITH ‘THE BEAR 66’ AT WIR
Winner Will Pocket $3,066 in Race Honoring Hall of Famer Roger Regeth
GREEN BAY, Wis. (April 27, 2022) – The TUNDRA Super Late Model Series will honor long-time racer, Hall of Famer, and Circle of Famer Roger “The Bear” Regeth in Great Lakes Testing Round One at Wisconsin International Raceway on Saturday, May 14.
The main feature event will be presented by long-time Regeth supporter Stumpf Ford and will be 66 laps in distance. Regeth was well-known in the state of Wisconsin for his tenacity and success on the asphalt and dirt, often carrying Stumpf Ford on the side of his race machines. It is believed that Regeth, with his time also as pace car driver, has the most laps of anyone around WIR.
“With this being the first race at WIR since The Bear’s passing, we wanted to continue to cement his legacy as a legendary racer,” said Matt Panure, Director of Operations for TUNDRA. “Everyone in racing knew him. My dad raced against him, he inspected his cars, and we both worked with him as officials at Kaukuana. We knew we had to do something at this event to honor everything he meant to this sport.”
Thanks to support from Stumpf Ford, the race will have even more incentive for racers to attend and visit Victory Lane, paying $3,066 to the winner. The Second Place finisher will take home a minimum $1,066, and Third a minimum $766.
“We owe a lot of thanks to Stumpf Ford for being such great supporters of WIR,” Panure said. “With such a long history at the track and with Regeth, they were the perfect partners for this event.”
Fans attending the event will also have a chance to pick up a signed copy of The Bird and the Bear by local motorsports author Joe Verdegan. Verdegan penned the book which outlines the life and times, as well as the rivalry, between Regeth and fellow local legend J.J. Smith.
The race event on Saturday, May 14 begins with qualifying at 12:30 pm with the first race event beginning at 2 pm. The TUNDRA Super Late Model Series will be joined by the WIR ¼-Mile Late Models, Wisconsin Sport Trucks, and Figure 8s.
Wisconsin International Raceway is located just past the roundabout at Highways 55 and KK outside of Kaukauna, Wis. Rough camping is available on the grounds for the event. For more information visit www.wirmotorsports.com.
